Ellery loses its last bakery

The front of Kurtz Bakery on Main Street, its window empty and a hand-lettered sign taped inside the door.
Kurtz Bakery on Main Street, Saturday afternoon.

Kurtz Bakery closed its doors Saturday, three years after Nell Kurtz left for Seattle. Pat Lindgren, who has kept the bakery open since, is moving to Glasgow, where her sister lives.

For the first time since 1911, Ellery has no bakery.

People lined up on Main Street before seven for the last loaves, and by nine the shelves were empty. "I'd have kept going if I could," Pat said. "It's too much for one person, and there isn't a second one."

The building is for sale. Pat has asked anyone who has a cake pan at home with a Kurtz Bakery label on it to keep it.
