Ellery's baker celebrates 30 years
March 12. Nell Kurtz has unlocked the door of Kurtz Bakery on Main Street at six every morning for thirty years, and on Saturday Ellery will say thank you.
She took over her mother Hilde's ovens and has never let them go cold. "I've never wanted to be anywhere else," she said this week, between trays of cardamom bread. "Where would I go?"
Born in Ellery in 1961, Nell has never lived anywhere but Ellery, and Kurtz Bakery has never missed a morning. Ask anyone in town for a birthday cake, a funeral lunch or a loaf on a Tuesday, and they'll tell you the same name.
The Ladies Aid will pour coffee at the bakery from nine until noon on Saturday. Bring a story about Nell. Everyone has one.
Town council
Dog licenses due
Town clerk Len Voss reminds everyone that dog licenses are due at the town hall by the end of the month. They're still $5 a dog. The council also heard that the snow fence on the county road east of town is down again.
School news
Seeds in the window
Mrs. Brandt's kindergarten to second grade room has bean seeds sprouting in milk cartons along the south window. The children are measuring them every morning and would like you to know the tallest is Tilly's.
Parent-teacher conferences are March 19 and 20. Call the school to set a time.
Church notes
Lenten suppers
Ellery Lutheran's Wednesday Lenten services are at seven, with soup in the basement at six. Diane Albright asks for two more pans of bars for next week. The sign-up sheet is by the kitchen door.
